PART-TIME FLOWER CREW (June/July - October)
Dates: June or July through October
Days per week: 2-3 shifts per week (15 - 25 hours)
Weekly schedule: Monday and Tuesday mornings required (7am start Mondays, 6am start on Tuesdays). Additional shift possible later in the week. Half day or full day shifts available.
Compensation: $19/hr.
Job Description:
Our part-time flower crew position includes work within Bumbleroot’s entire field operation with a focus on flower harvest. You will spend much of your time harvesting flowers but will participate in all daily activities on the farm including (but not limited to) weeding, trellising, planting and packing flowers, along with other farm projects. You will be expected to wash totes and flower buckets, make bouquets and assist with shoulder season tasks such as harvesting storage crops, digging dahlia tubers, field cleanup, etc.
We sell flower crops to wholesale customers (grocers, floral designers and the Maine Flower Collective), make mixed bouquets for our Flower CSA & Saturday farmstand, and sell DIY flower buckets direct to retail customers. We grow many flower varieties with a focus on dahlias. Multiple days per week are spent harvesting thousands of stems for many hours at a time. We harvest in all weather conditions and this work is fast-paced and very physically demanding. After a training period, you will be expected to navigate our harvest lists, participate in record keeping, move rapidly from one task to the next, and have a clear understanding of farm organization and workflow.
Requirements:
The ideal candidates for our flower crew have a full season of commercial farming experience or have worked in other manual labor jobs that demand a fast pace with many hours on your feet. We are looking for team members with a willingness to learn the quality standards of many flower varieties, a strong attention to detail, and good organizational skills.
We are seeking candidates who bring the following qualities:
Efficiency and work ethic
Focus and attention to detail
Excellent listening and communication skills
Positive attitude, kindness and compassion
Enthusiasm and eagerness to learn and grow as a flower farmer
Openness to feedback and tips from managers and team members
Organization and sense of initiative
A willingness to work both independently and in a team setting
Endurance and stamina
Must be able to lift 50lbs. and be on your feet for 5-6 hours at a time (with a 15 min break). We do not offer housing on the farm - reliable transportation to and from the farm is necessary (we are located 10 miles from downtown Portland), along with a valid driver’s license for operating farm vehicles to/from fields.
Work Environment & Schedule:
The Bumbleroot flower team is small but mighty! Our flower crew is made up of 4-5 farmers and works in tandem with our larger farm crew (15+ folks are employed by the farm in peak season). You will work closely with Bumbleroot owners and managers on a daily basis. Some tasks will be done independently, but most time will be spent working in small teams.
Half-day shifts are 5-6 hours, full-day shifts are 8-9 hours. We work a 7am-4pm schedule (including a 1 hour unpaid lunch break at noon) with 6am starts on our busiest harvest days (Tuesdys & Fridays) so that we can beat the heat and get sensitive crops out of the field. We work in all weather conditions and the work is fast-paced & physically demanding. Monday and Tuesday morning shifts are required for this role.
Paid time off is earned at a rate of 1 hour per every 40 hours worked, and we offer paid holidays in addition to other farm benefits such as free food and flowers from the farm, discounts on local products, etc. Our team is tight knit and we love what we do! This work is fun and challenging and you are guaranteed to learn more than you ever imagined about flowers!
Bumbleroot is an inclusive workplace and an equal opportunity employer. We strive for a culture of connectedness and believe that we are able to grow and learn better as a diverse team. We love to laugh, work hard, break farm records, and share our latest book and recipe adventures. We prioritize efficiency and productivity in all of our daily tasks and value kindness, cooperation and cultivating a healthy quality of life for our team members.
We currently cultivate 7 acres of certified organic vegetables and cut flowers. We use a combination of tractor-based practices as well as no-till and reduced tillage methods and our entire operation is certified organic. All planting, weeding, harvesting, and processing is done by hand. In 2024 we employed 12 farmers - about half year-round and half seasonal - and these folks are the heart of our farm. We utilize 6 high tunnels and 6 caterpillar tunnels to extend our growing season into the shoulder seasons and winter months.
We offer competitive wages & benefits for our employees. For seasonal staff, we offer paid time off, overtime pay, paid holidays during peak season, workers compensation insurance, Labor Movement workshops and training, free vegetables and flowers from the farm, and employee discounts for products we buy in from other local farms and food producers. There is room for growth at Bumbleroot and potential for year-round employment based on performance and the farm’s needs. Returning employees are offered additional benefits.
Our mission is to connect people in our community with the land and the food that sustains us. We are focused on climate resilience and soil health and are exploring how to incorporate no-till practices and perennial crops into the farm. We are committed to renewable energy, community-building, and equity. If this sounds like the type of place you’d like to work, check out our job descriptions and send us an email! We’d love to hear from you.
