Job Description:

This position will be focused on vegetable production, harvest, and sales. Farm hands participate in all daily farm activities including but not limited to: seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, setting up irrigation, washing and packing vegetables, CSA and market preparation, deliveries, cleanup and more. You will be expected to work CSA pick-up and farm stand shifts as a part of your regular schedule. Time will be spent in the greenhouse, in the wash/pack house, in the field and as a public-facing liaison at our farm stand. Work is fast-paced and physically demanding.

Requirements:

Candidates must have at least one year of farming experience on a commercial farm. We are looking for candidates with a strong work ethic and a positive attitude, excellent listening and communication skills, and ability to work with efficiency in a team setting, day after day. Commercial vegetable farming can be fulfilling, but it is very physically demanding and can be monotonous and repetitive. Self-motivation, stamina and a drive to work hard are key to this position.

We value positivity, focus, speed, and attention to quality and detail in all of our team members. Applicants must be able to lift 50lbs. and be on your feet for 6 hours straight. We do not offer housing so reliable transportation to and from the farm is necessary (we are located 25 minutes from downtown Portland), along with a valid driver’s license for driving farm vehicles in the field and on delivery routes.

Work Environment & Schedule:

Bumbleroot’s seasonal veggie crew is made up of 6-8 farmers; some tasks are completed together and some are tackled in smaller crews led by managers and crew leads. We have regular meetings to discuss priorities and workflow for the day/week and we value strong communication, respect, and clarity of expectations in the workplace. There will be occasional independent work but most of your time will be spent working in teams to complete tasks.

The job will be 8-9 hours a day, 5 days a week with a one hour unpaid lunch break. You will be expected to work one Saturday shift per month. Start times are early on harvest days during peak season (6am on Tuesdays & Fridays), and the rest of the week we start at 7:00am. We work in all weather conditions.

We pay overtime for every hour worked over 40 hours per week, offer paid time off in addition to other farm benefits (a workers compensation package, food and flowers from the farm, etc).

Bumbleroot is an inclusive workplace and an equal opportunity employer. We strive for a culture of connectedness and believe that we are able to grow and learn better as a diverse team. We love to laugh, work hard, break farm records, and share our latest book and recipe adventures. We prioritize efficiency and productivity in all of our daily tasks and value kindness, cooperation and cultivating a healthy quality of life for our team members.

We offer competitive benefits for our employees. We offer earned paid time off, paid holidays during peak season, workers compensation, Labor Movement workshops and training, free vegetables and flowers from the farm, and employee discounts for products we buy in from other local farms and food producers. There is room for growth at Bumbleroot and potential for year-round employment based on performance and the farm’s needs. Year-round and returning employees are offered additional benefits.

We currently cultivate 7-8 acres of certified organic vegetables and cut flowers. In 2023 we employed 13 farmers - some year-round and some seasonal - and these folks are the heart of our farm. We utilize 6 high tunnels and 6 caterpillar tunnels to extend our growing season. We use a combination of tractor-based practices as well as no-till methods and our entire operation is certified organic. All planting, weeding, harvesting, and processing is done by hand.

Our mission is to connect people in our community with the land and the food that sustains us. We are focused on climate resilience and soil health and are currently exploring how to incorporate no-till practices and perennial crops into the farm. We are committed to renewable energy, community-building, and equity. If this sounds like the type of place you’d like to work, check out our job descriptions and send us an email! We’d love to hear from you.
